The Paris Climate Agreement and What It Means for Solar
In December 2015, the United States and nearly 200 other countries worldwide joined the Paris Climate Agreement – a global effort to reduce the effects of climate change. There’s been political debate about the country’s participation in this agreement, with President Donald Trump withdrawing the US participation in November 2020. Now that President Biden is in office, one of the first things he did was rejoin the Paris Agreement.
Paris Agreement: What You Need to Know
This international agreement aims to combat global temperature increases by reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. Through the agreement, all parties participating commit to reducing their climate pollution, with efforts to assist developing nations with implementing these adaptation efforts.
Not only does the Paris Agreement create a unified effort to protect our planet, but it also establishes a framework that countries can follow to participate in global climate action. Part of this process includes improved climate goals over the years and transparent reporting for accountability to these initiatives. The intentions are as follows:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions to reduce the global temperature rise
- Create a framework for accountability, transparency, and the achievement of more aggressive climate change goals
- Provide climate change support for developing nations
We Can All Do Our Part to Stop Global Warming
The Paris Agreement was significant because many countries reached a consensus that massive action needs to happen to fight global warming. Climate change is a threat to humanity and the environment, and the only way to slow this damage is if everyone works together.
Researchers have found that human-generated emissions are a significant factor contributing to global warming. When pollution gasses collect in the atmosphere, it causes the greenhouse effect that changes the earth’s climate and temperature.
While countries and larger organizations need to implement efforts to fight global warming, changes need to happen on an individual level. Families can be part of the solution by reducing their carbon footprint and focusing on clean energy sources as much as possible.
