California Solar Power: 3 Changes in 2019
Like many other industries, the solar industry is changing with each year. Not only has technology improved, but energy bills and regulations are being adjusted on both federal and state levels. If you are considering an investment in solar energy for your home or business, then it is important that you stay informed about how the industry will be changing this year and going forward.
What’s New in 2019?
Here are a few solar energy changes that you should watch in 2019:
- New Construction Requirements: The Energy Commission here in California now requires that all new homes built in the state need to include a solar. If you are preparing for new home construction, then make sure that you include this cost in your budget. These requirements go into effect starting in 2020.
- Federal Tax Credits: As mentioned in our last blog post, 2019 is the last year to maximize the federal tax credits that are currently offered. Installing a solar power system before the end of the year could save you thousands of dollars due to the federal tax credits that are available to you this year.
- Net Metering: One benefit of having solar installed is that through net metering with your utility company, you can use the excess electricity that your solar system has produced as credits to pay for the energy when your solar panels aren’t producing enough for your household requirements. For example, when you are using more electricity during the summer months to cool your home, you can then pull from the extra credits that you banked when your solar system was producing more electricity than you were using in your home. In the state of California, all utility areas have reached their net metering cap, which means that new solar power customers will be signed up for the Net Energy Metering 2.0.
